How we help make Lincoln prosper.

ESL Classes

The Center has had over 13,000 students studying English in our classrooms since the program’s conception. Arriving from over 35 countries thus far, and speaking over a dozen native languages, the students have utilized our instructors and facilities to better their opportunities. Currently, we are serving nearly 800 students every month. Additionally, ESL courses are coupled with classes designed to acclimate new arrivals to American culture. Classes are tiered into five levels, and students are placed in courses based on an initial comprehension test. As an added incentive, students that excel academically and attend classes are requested, are then able to earn “bonus points” which they can then spend in our very own retail store.

Adult Education @ SCC

The POP program helps low income non-traditional students go to college at Southeast community college. Through partners, The Center for People in Need offers 45 credit hours at no-cost along with wrap-around care. We also provide retention staff at SCC who will help with academics and monitoring student success in class. We have two full-time staff members at The Center, dedicated to assisting with removing barriers from student’s paths to successfully obtaining a degree. We offer incentives for successful completion of quarters, as well as for monthly attendance to classes. The program also offers students access to internet reimbursement. The POP program also offers an extension scholarship for students who have successfully completed the 45 credit hours and have met the required GPA. The extension program assist those students with tuition for the remainder of their classes until graduation.
